When PanAsia Surgery welcomed its 50,000th patient this year, founder Dr Melvin Look did not dwell on the size of the number. Instead, he saw it as a moment to reflect on the trust that patients and colleagues have placed in the practice over the years.
“We regularly monitor our patient metrics to understand how we can do better,” he says. “As such, hitting our 50,000 mark did not come as a surprise, but what we felt was a deep sense of gratitude to our patients and medical colleagues for supporting us all these years.”
For Dr Look, the milestone is especially meaningful because much of PanAsia Surgery’s growth has come through word of mouth. “The majority of new clients come to us because of a recommendation from our ex-patients, so it’s a strong testament that we are doing something right,” he says.
That trust has been built one patient at a time. Behind the headline figure are thousands of individual experiences, each carrying its own hopes, fears, and challenges.
“We have had many firsts and many success stories, but we rather remember that every new patient brings a duty of care, no matter how small or routine their problems are,” says Dr Look. “Each and every one represents 50,000 individual stories.”
That philosophy has guided PanAsia Surgery since its beginnings in 2009, when Dr Look created a multidisciplinary practice at a time when most specialists operated independently.
“We felt that bringing the best doctors together in a multi-specialty group would be a force multiplier, as you can benefit from the expertise of experts with different skills working together to solve complex problems,” he explains.
From the outset, the practice focused on advancing minimally invasive surgery, bringing together specialists with expertise across different subspecialties. Today, the team continues to expand. However, technology and expertise are only part of the equation. Dr Look understands that surgery can be an intimidating experience, and that patients need support beyond the operating theatre.
“We have a great team of nurses, dietician, and clinic assistants who are experienced in supporting our patients through their entire journey, from administrative matters to nursing and rehabilitation after surgery,” he says.
Modern communication has also changed the way patients access care. “Any medical advice or support you need is just a WhatsApp away,” he says.
Medicine itself has evolved dramatically since Dr Look first entered practice. Advances in minimally invasive procedures and digital technologies have transformed the patient experience, making consultations and follow-up care more seamless than ever.
“Teleconsultation and review of high-resolution imaging virtually is now fairly routine,” he says. “The use of AI as an interface will be the next challenge. We are keen to employ the benefits without losing the human touch at all times.”
That balance between innovation and compassion is something he believes has enabled PanAsia Surgery to earn the confidence of generations of families. “We are proud of the legacy of caring we have built up with our sincerity and competence,” he says. “We now have multi-generation families who are all our patients.”
At a time when medical information is readily available, he believes the role of a doctor remains as important as ever. “We are very grateful that our patients trust us in guiding them through every step of their medical care,” he says.
As PanAsia Surgery enters its next chapter, Dr Look intends to continue building on that foundation while bringing in younger specialists with advanced expertise. “We will continue to build on our legacy and rejuvenate our team with outstanding young doctors with special skills,” he says.
Even as medicine continues to evolve, some qualities remain timeless. “A good surgeon needs a clear mind, steady hands and a brave heart,” says Dr Look. “That will never change.”
