One of the issues that popular travel destinations face today is overtourism. A quick scroll through Instagram or TikTok will show that certain neighbourhoods in places like Tokyo, Bali, or Rome are always teeming with tourists no matter the season. What this results in is a less than enjoyable experience for first time tourists and returning visitors alike.
Unfortunately, Hong Kong, which is a beloved destination for the Singapore and Southeast Asia market, is not exempt from this travel trend. The good news is, there are always alternatives. And in Hong Kong, that alternative is EAST Hong Kong – a buzzy and contemporary luxury property under Swire Hotels.
The hotel, which opened in 2010, recently underwent a refresh and rebrand, and is more than ready to welcome guests who are searching for authentic experiences that go beyond the usual. Located in Taikoo, visitors will appreciate EAST Hong Kong’s proximity to popular areas like Causeway Bay and Central, as well as the neighbourhood’s more local and less crowded atmosphere.

Harbour Corner Room
More than just a place to stay, EAST Hong Kong serves as a centre for activity in Taikoo, welcoming both guests and locals through its doors. Once you enter, the lobby (also known as Domain) is more than just a place where one checks in – it is a multi-faceted space that’s perfect for both work and leisure.
From the long bar tables that face out to the street to hidden pockets of comfortable seating, Domain serves as a great spot for getting work done on the go or meeting up with friends over coffee. And when it comes to connectivity and convenience, the Taikoo MTR station and Cityplaza Shopping Mall are conveniently located right outside.
Harbour View Room
While the lobby may feel intimate, the property towers above the area and boasts over 300 guest rooms, featuring six room configurations – from the entry level Urban View room (which boasts a spacious 300 sq ft) to the stylish Harbour View Suite at double the size.
On my stay, I had the pleasure of staying at the Harbour View room, which allowed me to regularly gaze out onto Victoria Harbour and enjoy room features like the filtered water tap, dedicated work desk, spacious walk-in rain shower, and more. On particularly busy days, it was great sinking into the queen-sized bed, which boasted crisp, cool sheets and the right amount of firmness.

Enjoy your meals at FEAST, EAST Hong Kong's convivial dining area
From breakfast to dinner, FEAST is the property’s culinary centre, boasting ala carte and semi-buffet dining options. From local dishes and Asian specialties to Western favourites, you’re sure to be spoilt for choice.
When it comes to evening drinks, no need to jostle with the crowds over at Lan Kwai Fong. Simply head up to the hotel’s 32nd floor where rooftop bar Sugar awaits. Here, you can indulge in bold, original cocktails, as well as Japanese-inspired sharing plates. Eat, drink, and be merry as you lounge around in plush sofas and cosy nooks, all while enjoying skyscraper views.
Since Taikoo is both a residential area and a busy working hub during the day, you’re bound to discover a few local gems just a few steps away from the hotel. Avoid the perpetually crowded eateries featured all over TikTok and walk over to Men Wah Bing Teng (a beloved cha chaan teng chain) for your HK milk tea and egg tart fix or head to JOMO Kitchen, which is just a two-minute walk away, for Instagram-worthy coffee and cakes.

Authenticity Meets Individuality
Following the rebrand, EAST urges its visitors and guests to make empowered, independent choices, especially since it is a property that’s immersed in the local community.
To sum it all up, Jennifer Cheung, General Manager of EAST Hong Kong, shares, “We are constantly pushing boundaries to inspire creativity and foster a sense of community among our guests. We understand that the new generation of travellers is looking for a welcoming environment where they can truly be themselves and connect with like-minded individuals. They want to feel at ease throughout the stay and look for thoughtfully curated, authentic experiences that offer an insider’s view of the city.”
