Touting itself as a “beacon of light and respite”, LUMO is a new bar and restaurant that looks to positivity and creativity as its raison d’etre. The 70-seater watering hole in Singapore’s Boat Quay area is a creative hotbed, where cocktails are not what they seem and food is given an imaginative spin.

While bordering on gimmicky, the Patty Royale cocktail is worth a try. At the heart of it is an IMPOSSIBLE (as in the plant-based meat) distillate, making it a spirit forward drink with hints of seared meat. The curious concoction’s savory profile is paired with macerated fermented cherry tomatoes, bunashimeji mushrooms, and shiso leaves soaked in vermouth. Meanwhile, the Bamm-Bamm is a crowd pleaser with its creamy, fruity, and malty flavour profile. It’s really hard to be mad at a cocktail comprised of Old Duff Genever Gin, Genmaicha yogurt, and a colorful spoonful of fruity pebbles cereal.

At LUMO, light bites are taken seriously. The aged chicken mid-wings (brined in salt water and ginger for one day, aged in dry ager for three), with their intense flavor, are best enjoyed with your fingers. Meanwhile, the potato hash, duck prosciutto, and homemade sour cream is surprisingly elegant for something so delightfully sinful. Where mains are concerned, the twice-cooked snapper (first pan seared, then baked) is expertly executed with its crisp skin and fork-tender flesh, pairing well with the accompanying eggplant purée, avruga caviar, and clear tomato water.

The spotlight has been on its sister outlets – Bar Cicheti and Caffe Cicheti – for a while now, and Cicheti, the one that started it all, wants some of the shine too. Following the momentary pause brought about by Singapore’s circuit breaker period, the well-loved Kandahar Street joint famous for its Neapolitan pizzas is back with new additions that complement the existing menu.

The fine-tuned menu now includes starters that can hold their own, such as the zesty Cicheti Chopped Salad, which includes salumi, pepperoncini, buffalo mozzarella, and radicchio tossed in oregano vinaigrette. Meanwhile, Zuppa di Cozze e N’duja is a Sicilian summer in a bowl, where plump Australian mussels are sautéed in a spicy tomato and white wine sauce, sprinkled with bits of the spicy sausage. Where pizza is concerned, go for the off-menu special – Chef Lim Yew Aun’s Sicilian-inspired Napoletana. It is simple, restrained, but yet delicious where dollops of stracciatella meet with slivers of white anchovy marinated in chilli flakes and lemon zest, adding a nuanced saltiness that perfectly blends with the subtle flavor of the cheese and pizza dough.

While desserts are often left as an afterthought, make a mental note at the start of the meal to save room for Cicheti’s two new additions. First, there is the Strawberry Parfait: Layers of ricotta mouse, chopped pistachios, and strawberry essence, finished with a drizzle of honeyed balsamic reduction. Finally, the Lemon Tart is quite the palate cleanser with rosemary cream, candied lemon peel, almond crumbs, and capers.
