As Singapore celebrates 60 years of independence, we spotlight a new wave of changemakers across business, culture, and civic leadership. Armed with bold ideas, lived experiences, and an unwavering sense of purpose, these are the individuals shaping a more inclusive, innovative, and resilient nation.

What does it mean to build a nation today? In the Singapore of 2025, which is wealthier, more connected, yet grappling with deeper questions of equity, identity, and sustainability, it no longer rests solely in institutions or infrastructure. Increasingly, it’s in the hands of individuals: Founders, reformers, creators, and quiet disruptors who are laying the groundwork for a future shaped by progress and purpose. In this month's special, we spotlight a new generation of leaders reimagining what success looks like – from the boardroom to the art world, from hospitality to home services. Some are preserving legacy through reinvention; others are rewriting rules with fresh conviction. But all share a deep belief in Singapore’s promise and a determination to make their mark not just for today, but for generations to come.

DANIEL THONG
Founder, Nimbus Homes

Nimbus Homes has been quietly shaking up the home services industry in Singapore since its establishment in 2017. The platform isn’t merely a marketplace matching users with on-demand cleaning or handyman services; it’s a movement to professionalise and dignify frontline work. Unlike typical gig-economy models, Nimbus staff are fully employed, trained and part of the company’s growing 300-strong in-house team.

For Daniel Thong, the company’s founder and CEO, Singapore’s success story over the last 60 years – built on meritocracy, diversity and sheer grit – deeply influences the way he leads. “These values are critical for Singapore’s success and for ours too,” he reflects, noting how important it is to create a culture where employees, regardless of background, can thrive and feel valued.

Thong’s own career path is proof that playing it safe doesn’t always lead to job security or success. After graduating, he turned down a prestigious consulting role in the UK, opting to help a friend build a startup instead. Then Brexit hit, and the consulting job disappeared. It was a turning point for Thong.

“If a ‘safe’ job isn’t exactly safe, why not pursue something I truly wanted to do – my own venture?” That sparked the creation of Nimbus and a relentless devotion towards shaping an industry where frontline workers are paid and treated fairly.

Thong’s long-term vision is clear: To champion progressive wages for tradespeoples and position his company as an employer of choice for skilled home service professionals. His leadership philosophy rests on staying laser-focused on Nimbus’s mission – something easier said than done in the volatile startup landscape.

“Focus is a constant struggle for many founders. It’s about cutting through the noise and knowing which signal matters most.”

“Focus is a constant struggle for many founders,” he admits. “It’s about cutting through the noise and knowing which signal matters most.” For Thong, that focus is sharpened by the support of a strong founding team, mentors and a board of investors who share his belief in Nimbus’s purpose.

Driven by both heart and hustle, Thong is proving that home services can be high-quality yet human-centric, delivering spotless homes, as well as a more equitable future for the people who keep them running.
