RISIS: Handcrafting Perfection

16 May 2024

Since its incorporation in 1976, RISIS has gone on to adapt their skill and knowledge in gold-plating to a wider range of jewellery and home and lifestyle products.

It began with a romantic stroll through the Singapore Botanic Gardens. In the 1950s, a young scientist, Dr Lee Kum Tatt, and his wife, Engeline, were taking a walk through the gardens, marvelling at the orchids when she lamented how she wished they could last forever.

Approximately 20 years later, in 1974, he would present her with an orchid immortalised in gold. Dr Lee had, along with his team, discovered a way to preserve live orchids. Since then, the RISIS Orchid paved the way for many of RISIS’ hallmark products.

The RISIS Hallmark

Before each handcrafted orchid finds its way to a new customer, it begins its journey in one of the company’s state-of-the-art climate-controlled facilities. Only the fullest, most perfect blooms make the cut and are handpicked and subjected to stringent quality checks before it is eternally preserved in gold through a proprietary plating process.

The flowers are first immortalised in a proprietary formulation followed by a copper electroplating bath before it is plated in a lavish coat of 24K Swiss Gold, which is a nickel and cyanide-free special formulation unique to RISIS. The process of the coveted gold orchid is long and labour-intensive but it is this unparalleled dedication to craft and perfection that has propelled the homegrown brand to nearly 50 years of success.

Continued Pursuit for Perfection

Since its incorporation in 1976, RISIS has gone on to adapt their skill and knowledge in gold-plating to a wider range of home and lifestyle products, including intricate sculptures, commemorative plaques, framed art, home ornaments, and luxurious collectibles. While the journey of their orchids begins in the garden, the journey of a RISIS sculpture begins in the studio, where the artists first put their ideas to paper.

Conceptualisation and sketching will first bring an idea to life, but hand sculpting and casting are what truly realises it. Handcrafted details and finishing breathe life into these sculptures, adding impeccable details achieved only through handcrafting. Each piece undergoes meticulous hand-finishing before immersion in 24K Swiss Gold, followed by a protective coating application, with a rigorous quality assurance that ensures each piece meets the highest standards of craft. With RISIS’ Bespoke Customisation offering, items such as sculptures, card holders, pen holders, and frames can be personalised, making them one-of-a-kind artisanal gifts for loved ones, as well as corporate gifts for business associates.

Finesse for Jewellery

While brooches may have given it its start, RISIS can hardly be known only for its brooches. Its Spring/Summer 2024 collection, aptly named 1974, is an ode to Dr Lee’s first gold-plated orchid to his wife during the same year, and features some beautiful jewellery in the form of a body and hand chain, as well as the more classic earrings, necklaces, and hair clips.

Additionally, two of the RISIS’s latest collections, the Vanda Whispers and Resilient Vanda, are inspired by Singapore's national flower – the iconic Vanda Miss Joaquim – and are accompanied by elegant grey Freshwater Pearls or with briolette-cut teardrop Citrine, making for graceful jewellery that can be easily worn daily or for special occasions. Both jewellery collections are exceptional and demonstrate a lifetime of artistry and exceptional skill.
