INSIDE BY PORTFOLIO 2020

Dear Reader, I was with a designer friend many months ago when he mentioned that wallpapers are making a strong comeback. It appears that people, left with limited choices for massive home transformation, have chosen to install wallpapers instead. “Imagine,” my friend tells me, “you only need two people at most to hang them and have virtually a new room by the end of the day.” It makes sense. I imagine that the enveloping transformation is fast, efficient, massive, and albeit virtual, is true and palpable. And with limited mobility, being ‘transported’ to another place, even by just a few yards of wallpaper, will have to do. Through the past months, your home may have been transformed into a small, incomplete universe where you tried to make things work out perfectly. A small office may have been carved out of your media room, and your domestic connectivity may have been bettered that you can now attend online meetings even in your bedroom – if it comes to that. You may have, as other friends observe, finally sat down together as a family to share a home-cooked meal. By the time this supplement lands in your hands, you have probably already made hotel reservations for a bit of air early next year – perhaps with intentions of catching the tail end of the Niseko season or surrendering your exhausted spirits to the ministrations of a masseuse in the Maldives—anywhere, basically, that the travel bubble or a green lane can assure you of a safe passage. But no matter, life does look strange and will probably stay this way despite the gradual return of familiar rituals. We simply need to adapt and master whatever comes our way. As in last year’s edition of INSIDE, we encourage you to explore the possibilities in your own home, with the aid of a design professional if necessary, and recreate it according to your authentic drives. We cannot think of a better time than now to do this when making new spaces in your homes has become imperative. We hope this supplement provides you with inspiration, access to professional services, and a good grasp of the market’s solutions. My team and I learned some important lessons about making a home as we put this supplement together. We hope those lessons are well reflected in these pages.
