Pop-up, modular, mobile, capsule, and Jetson-esque skyscrapers: Just a few homes of the future ideas romancing the 21st century homeowner. But for those with their feet still planted firmly on realistic ground, a futuristic home doesn’t have to look like it came from a science fiction movie — it just has to function smartly and complement our increasingly digital lives

When someone mentions the home of the future, what comes to mind? It’s easy to think of robot butlers, knobs and buttons that control anything and everything, as well as otherworldly design and architecture that looked like it may have popped out of a sci-fi film or comic. But in reality, the home of the future is not too far removed from reality. Instead, these dwellings boast practical improvements and developments that go beyond a short-lived wow factor.

While some of you may have welcomed Smart Assistants like Google Home or Amazon Echo into your home with open arms, other interior additions still pretty much function like their predecessors. Except this time, they can be remotely controlled via a dedicated app on your smartphone or have gone through a design revamp, rendering a more thoughtful product that anticipates needs and complements your lifestyle.

Here, we take a closer look at some nifty possible additions to your home that will make it future-ready, whether it’s for entertainment purposes, a better bathroom experience, purifying the quality of indoor air, or to simply make washing dishes less tedious.

Pump Up the Volume: Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 50

With the Active Room Compensation technology, expect advanced sound customization with the BeoLab 50 speaker. Using an external microphone, BeoLab 50 measures its physical acoustic surroundings and applies the ideal compensation filters to product optimum sound at certain listening positions, as well as throughout the entire room.

What’s more, the unique Acoustic Lens Technology that handles the sound dispersion of the upper frequencies, can be found on top of the speaker. It disperses the sound via Beam Width Control into either a 180-degree sound mode for occasions like parties or movie screenings, or to a narrow mode for a dedicated “sweet spot” listening position.

Showers are already great, but can they be made better? AXOR says yes and introduces the PowderRain, which are new overhead showers that feature a new spray technology. With the PowderRain, users experience a complete moistening of the skin due to dozens of light, micro fine sprays that do not bounce off, and instead, cover the body more carefully in water.

“PowderRain is the ultimate in the shower. A silky rain. A protective cloak of water. Gentle, soft, and nevertheless powerful. Like a cocoon,” says Silke Giessler, Head of AXOR Brand Marketing. At the heart of it all, the secret to the future of showers lies in 0.35-millimeter nozzles openings, with over 1,000 individual nozzles.

Not only is the home of the future functional and user-friendly, it also takes into account the homeowner’s wellness. And this is exactly what Gessi’s Binario Systemi offers. It brings design, customization, and “5 sense wellness” functions to a new level. The ceiling installation of the Binario System is similar to those used in the lighting industry and is customizable in number, length, and shape. In addition, users can place modules with different functions, including waterfall, atomization, rainfall, as well as lighting and sound.

With regards to the system’s lighting capabilities, Gessi developed it together with Artemide, following a long-standing collaboration. The technical ceiling rail, where the chosen elements for lighting, water, and sound are fitted, can be arranged and customized in almost infinite ways, and even be extended beyond the shower to provide lighting and sound to the rest of the bathroom.

Sink Sensation: hansgrohe Kitchen Sink Combination

Who knew that design and function would be buzzwords used to describe the humble kitchen sink? hansgrohe did – especially with the release of the new sink combination options that feature intuitive controls and sophisticated functions.

At the heart of it, the kitchen sink combinations aim to make daily kitchen chores easier, which is why they offer a choice of two innovative control concepts. These include the water control unit, which has been separated from the tap and placed in the front right-hand side of the sink rim. By doing so, the simple change offers all users, regardless of age, height, and even physical disability, added convenience.

Meanwhile, the second model integrates Select technology into the sink itself. It features a large button on the right sink rim, which turns water from the multi-jet kitchen mixer on and off. The button also opens and closes the drain so that no other control is required in or around the sink.
